Principles, Tips, and Tricks for low noise design. Most of these are applicable to both above and sub threshold designs.

Sizing

Rule of Thumb: Devices that contribute to the gain should be larger. In general, noise increases by the square root of a device's gain. Thus gain grows faster than noise and the input referred noise decreses.

  • Thus transistors that contribute to the gain should have a large gm. (Mirrors, loads, and other should have a small gm)
  • When resistors create gain they too should be large
